"The love from the people on the streets is palpable." Yari FDNY EMS Paramedic

New York City's EMS workers are the lowest paid first responders in the city. Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics are paid far less than police and firefighters, even as they respond to a record number of 911 calls and fall ill with coronavirus by the hundreds. NYCityLens spoke to Yari, a paramedic in Queens, who says he and his colleagues need more support—and respect—from City Hall.

"We don't do this for the paycheck.  We don't do this because we are trying to be rich.  The people that serve in EMS, do it because they like helping people."  "We are the lowest paid first responders.  We have the most amount of women and minorities, as far as any other first responder workforce."

"We get paid about 38 thousand dollars less then fire, police, or sanitation.  We are not considered uniform members of the service."   "Tough physically, tough emotionally, there are a lot of people dying., a lot of people scared, a lot of people that we have to comfort."

"Today I did three cardiac arrests, yesterday I did three cardiac arrests. This has definitely been the hardest week of my career."   Yari FDNY EMS Paramedic.
